Make a new wine discovery this year, and explore the wine regions of the world with the Discovery Mixed Six. Super-elegant organically-grown Sancerre from Laporte sets the scene for this voyage of discovery, which takes us first to Hungary, to the region of Tokaji, where Patricius make elegant dry white wine from traditional Furmint grapes, then the heart of Jumilla in Eastern Spain, where Monastrell thrives. Across the Atlantic, we visit Brazil first, where Casa Valduga craft classic Chardonnay, then we venture to Argentina, where Susana Balbo - the Queen of Argentine wine - makes the impressive Brioso. Finally, we cross the Pacific, down-under to Australia - the Frankland River region in particular - where Swinney have made a name growing exceptional Syrah (not Shiraz, mind!). Terroir Chardonnay Casa Valduga 2021 1 x 75cl 13.5% Straw yellow,clear and bright, this wine shows lifted bright fruit characters of tropical fruits, like pineapple. The wine is full bodied with the richness and palate weight of a classic Chardonnay. Sancerre White Le Rochoy Organic Laporte 2022 1x 75cl 13.5% Discover Rochoy: a light yellow wine with silvery highlights, crystal-clear and limpid. The nose offers white flowers, ripe yellow-fleshed fruit, and a hint of angelica. Fresh, expressive, and well-balanced on the palate, with flinty minerality and a subtle smokiness. Rochoy unfolds with splendid fullness and astonishing generosity. Tokaji Furmint Dry Patricius 2021 1 x 75cl 12% This is an absolutely superb and fabulous-value dry wine. Chablis-like in structure, texture and vibrant acidity (no surprise, since Tokaji is on the same latitude as Chablis), it has far more expressive aromas and flavours of lemon zest, peach and honey. Patricius originally made this to satisfy demand for dry white wine within Hungary, however its quality is so exceptional that it has since become their number one export. Frankland River Syrah Swinney 2021 1 x 75cl 14% As soon as you take a sip, it's apparent why this is named 'Syrah' and not 'Shiraz:' it has a freshness and finesse that is far more closely allied to the Rhône valley than to the Barossa or McLaren Vale. With an impressively glass-staining black colour, it has glorious, soaring, damson and loganberry fruit, a sprinkling of Chinese five spice, and fine marzipan and cherry kernel notes. Adding substance to the fruit and spice character, there is a certain juicy rare steak quality to it - un vrai Syrah! On the palate it shows superb, super-silky, sensuous smoothness that at first disguises its downright depth and density. As with the other Swinney wines, it's full of freshness, sophistication, beautiful balance and persistence on the palate. There is a tiny hint of oak character, so skillfully integrated that you scarcely notice. El Tiempo Que Nos Une Bodega Cerron 2022 1x 75cl 14% With a beautiful, bright colour and exciting, vibrant, crunchy, just-picked fruit character, this wine is a delight for both the eyes and the palate. Medium-bodied, crisp and refreshing, it is fresh, satisfying and well-balanced. It comes from vineyards around the village of Fuente-Álamo, whose 'three pillars' of warm days, cold nights and limestone soil make their distinctive mark on its excellent wines. Brioso Susana Balbo 2020 1 x 75cl 14.5% Deep, bright ruby red color. Aromas of dark berries, spices and notes of tomato leaves, contributed mainly by the two Cabernets (Sauvignon and Franc). The fruity aromas continue in the mouth, followed by excellent tension due to its natural acidity. The other varieties provide texture and roundness to the blend. It has an elegant and lingering finish. This wine has great ageing potential and can be stored for up to 20 years.
