Gilbert
Gilbert Family Wines have their roots in the Eden Valley of South Australia, where Joseph Gilbert was one of the first to plant grapes. They still make delicious Rieslings there under the Gilbert + Gilbert label. Now, however, the majority of their wines come from the fashionable regions of Orange and Mudgee in New South Wales. Simon Gilbert established the winery in 2004 after working for more than two decades as winemaker for some of the top producers in the area. Simon and his son, Will, specialise in cool climate wines with a common thread of elegance, purity and structure This winery is right at the front of Australia's new wave, making a wide range of wines which balance traditional styles and techniques with the more experimental. Sourced from vineyards in Mudgee and Orange, this wine truly has the best of both worlds. With Shiraz, being sourced from Mudgee, at an elevation of 520 meters above sea level, these grapes are quite rich and round rainfall is 600mm per annum. By contrast, Oranges cooler climate, and higher elevation of 880 metres, produces more elegant and refined qualities. This unusual blend of grapes was destemmed and cold soaked for 3 days to fix the aroma and colour, while to maintain the bright fresh fruit character, a combination of old neutral oak and stainless steel were used for maturation. A delicious soft, aromatic, silky medium-bodied red with fragrant mulberry and damson aromas accented with half a twist of black pepper. A wonderful red which will work well both slightly chilled or at room temperature.
